It started in 1974. My best buddies in the whole world (Guerry Bruner and David DeVore) and me (George Fisher) were nuts about airplanes, in particular, fighter pilots of the World War 2 variety.
As 6th graders at McKibben Lane Elementary School in Macon, GA, our lives revolved around building model airplanes, talking about airplanes, and generally anything about flying. Our trips to the school library enhanced this quest, what with the C.B. Colby picture books and others; particularly one titled GREAT AMERICAN FIGHTER PILOTS OF WW2, by Robert D. Loomis. This book had a picture of a man who we would discover was from our hometown. This man, of course, was General Scott. Using our 11 year old gray matter, we reckoned then, that it only made sense that this fellow was surely still living and quite naturally he would be living in Macon, where then we looked in the telephone directory and sure enough, there in black and white, SCOTT, ROBERT L. Well, we fired off a letter to the address as none of us had the tenacity to call in person. A week or so later his FATHER called us! General Scott wasn't living in Macon, but rather Sun City, Arizona and his Dad had been the one to receive our letter ... he was 89 years old at the time!
Well, to make a long story short, we fired off letters to Sun City, Arizona, and the rest, like they say, is history. Shortly after establishing communication with General Scott, we decided it would be wise to have his FAN CLUB. There was, and is, no dues, no newsletter, or anything else one would expect from your traditional fan clubs, but we can assure you that the FAN part is there !! So, after 20 plus years of corresponding, visiting, and revering such a man as General Scott, we feel it our obligation to hog him no longer. People must know about this man and his achievements (And there are MANY!) So, after the three charter members of the RLSFCA got together in 1998 as grown ups over a steak and maybe a margarita or two, we decided how better a way to get the word out to a whole bunch of folks in a hurry without a lot of expense? Here's your answer friends and neighbors!
