Winter Park Mayor at MuseumTuesday

From: Ken Kraft
To: Marilynn

Dear Marilynn,
The Mayor of Winter Park, Florida, Kip Marchman, called me yesterday to advise that he was traveling to Atlanta with an Air Force Colonel, I believe, and wanted information on the location of the museum and wondered if it might be  possible for him to make an official call upon Scotty.   I sent him various web sites for information and advised I would try to locate someone for him to talk to and, if possible, a meeting with General Scott.   You may remember that two years ago when I was preparing to come to Scotty's 95th birthday I asked Mayor Marchman to sign an official City of Winter Park Proclamation  naming April 12, 2003 as Gen. Robert L. Scott Jr. Day in Winter Park, Florida in recognition of his former time living in Winter Park while serving as Commander of the Orlando Base.  The then Colonel Scott was also asked to speak at literary exercises at Rollins College on several occasions and gave the 1946 Commencement Address. I presented the proclamation to Scotty at his party and he seemed to be very interested and pleased to hear from Winter Park and was honored to receive the recognition from so long ago .....
Most Sincerely,
Ken

Hi Marilynn:
Enjoyed your update on my hero. Glad you got to visit him in the nursing home.  I got the most wonderful letter from him a few weeks ago. He liked the woodburning and painting I did for his birthday. He must have kept the burning of him in his uniform and sent the painting of his plane back to me and he had autographed it asking me to hold on to it as he didn't have room for it  anymore and I figured he was in a nursing home.  He also sent an autograph picture of himself.  I will cherish these always.   Do you have an address for his daughter? I would like to drop her a line and let her know how much her Dad has influnced my life. When I read about you and Mike seeing him,and you said about him being in bed,I knew he would always be up to seeing friends.I don't belive that man could ever say an unkind word about anyone. He is a true southern gentelman.
Well just wanted to drop a line and say hi. If you talk to George tell him I said hi.
Your friend

Subject: Great Site!

My name is Rob Leeds and I happened upon your Robert L. Scott fan club site as I often Google various people or events related to the AVG and the air war in China. I'm a retired Navy Captain (flew EP-3E reconnaissance aircraft in Europe) and have a keen interest in military history and aviation. I first heard of Gen Scott when I was about 10 years old and saw "God is My Co-Pilot" on TV and then read 'Boring a Hole in the Sky' shortly after that. I try to keep up with what this great American is doing since he has always been (along with "Tex" Hill) my role model for millitary aviation. Thanks for all you've put into the site so present day Americans can learn what he did. So many today don't know--about Gen Scott or his generation. Thanks for your efforts!

FROM - WMAZ ...

Scott Fraser knew Brigadier General Robert Scott as a legend, hero and as "Grandpa". The former Marine Pilot talked about his Flying Tiger Ace of a grandfather. Fraser said in his military career he traveled the world and in the process got a history lesson quite often on his grandfather.

SCOTT FRASER, GRANDSON;
"In Taiwan he's still seen as a hero even people who don't know exactly who he was in Japan there's McArthur and people who talk about Scotty. I've been to a hotel in Hong Kong where they still have the bullet holes where he strafed when the Japanese were still occupying that hotel in Hong King and they still keep them there and people don't know all they know is a guy who strafed a Japanese General there in the hotel they never fixed the holes."

Fraser said Scott was the best grandfather ever. He remembered the General having to give him a certificate of "authenticity" when he was just seven showing he was his grandfather because none of the school kids believed him.

What an inspiring American hero is Gen. Scott. I always refer to him and share information about his remarkable life when I run Eagle Scout Board of Reviews. Boys today, as in the past, need to know about real heroes. There is none better than Gen. Scott. I appreciate having had  the opportunity to see the movie "God is My Co-Pilot," and to have read some of his special books. Looking forward to visiting the museum.

As my father recommended that book to me, I did not read it immediately, because I was too young to understand (I'm Swiss). But now, I just begun to read it, I'm really fascinated. I nearly can't stop reading!!! I'm also very fascinated by Airplanes so I begun to learn flying not long time ago

I read God is My Co-Pilot when my Dad recommended it to me. He had read it when he was younger. I was fascinated with the story of the Flying Tigers, General Chennault, the War in China, Airplanes and the story of Robert L. Scott. Since then I can not get my hands on enough of his books or flying. The way Mr. Scott writes of his love of flying is contagious. I'm seventeen right now, (without a drivers' liscense), but a want a pilots' liscense more than anything! I found this web site searching to find out if Mr. Scott was still alive. It would mean everything to me to hear his amazing stories first hand. May God bless you all, and keep you in good health.

As a kid growing up in the 60's, and having a father that drove LCVP's on the first wave of Siapan, and Guam, and was with MacArthur on his return to liberate the Philipines, the heroes of the second world war are the men that my generation look up to. Reading the book, and seeing the picture, "God is My Co-pilot", had a huge impact on me. I served in the Navy as soon as I was old enough!Robert L. Scott is a genuine hero of the highest caliber, and proof that the United States of America is the greatest country in the world. Thank you, General Scott, and all the men and women that have served to keep this county free. God bless you, Sir.

I first read Bob Scott's book "Damned To Glory" when a teenager back in 1944, and thought it was one of the most interesting things I had ever read. And I loved the poems that he started each chapter with.  Always kept an eye out for a copy at the used book stores and yard sales, flea markets, and etc. but never did find one. Just a very few years ago my sister-in-law (also a book nut) came to town and went book looking with my wife, I couldn't go but asked her to keep an eye out, and Lo and Behold, here she came with a nice copy. Then when I went to Oshkosh in '92, who should be talking on the stage of the "Theater In The Woods" but Gen Robt. L. Scott, Jr.!!! Age 84, and trim as could be!  Well, I rushed around to the stage entrance and caught Bob on his way out, and had a very nice chat with him, mentioning "Damned To Glory". He said "Charley, This is the first time in 40 years anyone has mentioned that book to me". I didn't have it with me, of course, but he kindly gave me

Dear General Scott,
How great it is to send you a note! Your life is so inspiring, not only you military exploits. The love you have for your wife is so deep. I remember reading about the 84,000(?) miles of girl trouble. I have told your story to many of my friends and relatives.

My wife did not like airplanes much when we married. In fact, she got sick of me watching 'Wings' and 'The History Channel'. Then she got a job at the Mid-America Air Museum in Liberal, Kansas. As she read and studied the history of the aircraft she started to share the love I
have had since reading 'God Is My Co-Pilot' in junior high. It is sad they no longer have a P-40 in the 98 plane collection and she fell in love with a Coursair! Oh,well.

I hope this finds you in good health and near God. I will check your website for a copy of your books. My wife can't wait to read them and I have not read them in a long time. Thanks to you and all who stand strong for the USA,
Harold Murray

My respect and admiration go out to all of the pilots who fought so well. I have a nicely autographed book from General Scott, and a great autographed picture of him next to his P-40.My very best to you General Scott, you are truly what America is all about.

Just got done watching God is my co-pilot on TMC had to get on the pc and find out more info on the Flying Tigers and wound up here. Although I was a school boy during WW2 I still look for all the information I can find. Good web site. I agree school kids should be shown movies like GIMCP- Tora Tora Tora-Longest Day-Mildway and ect. We got to keep the message alive about our www2 servicemen and what they did so we can be free.

I don't remember how old I was when I first saw the movie "God Is My Co-Pilot," but it was introduced to me by my father when I was a child. That movie along with Saving Private Ryan and so many others pays tribute to very special Americans who put it all on the line for our country. We as a nation owe people like General Scott and the many who served in uniform of that great generation a great debt of gratitude that mere words can never express. These Americans stood their watch, paid the price and never let us down. I wish every seventh grade social studies class was required to watch at least four movies during that special year of their lives that would give them some idea of where we as a nation came from historically. If I could choose the movies those kids had to view, I would choose "God Is My Co-Pilot," "Tora Tora Tora," "The Battle Of The Bulge," and "The Longest Day." We must never forget those who paid such a price for our freedom, not only to honor them, but

This is a tremendous site. Have read and re-read GIMC many times since I was a child and the movie is my favorite ( isn't it everyones ? ). Went to an airshow on 6/10 in Aurora, Illinois....and there to my total surprise was a P-40 on the runway that had just been flown in. In was
decked out in the Flying Tiger colors, with Gen Scott's name and little meatball flags ( his kills ) beneath. It made my day. The announcer said it was one of the few P-40's still flying. I have a 1944 copy of Gen Scott's second book "Damned to Glory"...it's in mint condition and I treasure it along with my copy of GIMC. I found it at a flea market! Keep up the good work.

I enjoyed reading all the comments of everyone who has signed your guestbook to date. I am truly amazed that Gen. Scott still has so many fans, including myself. I grew up in the 1950's on stories of Gen. Scott's exploits in China with the Flying Tigers. He was my first hero and the person that I wanted to be most like. He fired my drive to become a fighter pilot, but poor vision kept me from realizing my dream. Never the less, General Scott is truly a great American hero and a great Southerner. I have never forgotten him and went so far as to name my 1st son after him. Also, the father of a girl I dated in high school, flew with the General and the Flying Tigers in China during WWII. His name was Charles "Chuck" Hunter and has sinced passed away. Up til now, that was a cherished link to the man I most admired as a youth, that is, until I found this website! May the Hand of God always be upon your shoulder.

My bride of nearly 30 yrs and I were enroute to Florida a couple of months ago. After having an enjoyable Saturday morning viewing the pandas at Zoo Atlanta, we headed south on I-75 for Orlando. As I drove along, I thought of General Scott's mention in The Day I Owned the Sky of the museum he was affiliated with in the Macon area, and I decided to keep an eye out for signs along the interstate that might point the way. Fortunately we found the way, and discovered the outstanding facility that is The Museum of Aviation. I was very glad to see that parking spot #1 is still reserved for General Scott; the only disappointment of the day was not seeing a car in that spot! General Scott's books served and continue to serve as an inspiration to me and an example of American greatness; I will pass his wisdom along to my grandchildren, and hope others of my generation do the same!

General Scott is indeed an amazing person. I am honored to be acquainted with him.
I am writing a biography of Dennis Morgan, the star of the movie "God is My Co-Pilot. I contacted General Scott for information about the filming of the movie and the 2nd premiere in 1988. Because he and Dennis Morgan remained friends until Morgan's death in 1994, I asked General Scott to write the foreward to my book; to my delight, he consented.

To my good friend General Scott. You are truly the Captain of the Skies. You were kind enough to provide me an autograph a few years ago. You have most likely heard this from thousands of people, but next to my father, you made a difference in my life. I wanted to fly and become an Air Force pilot. I didn't make the cut and joined to Army Nat'l Guard and currently hold the rank of Major. I have both seen and read God Is My Copilot many times and so have my two grown sons, As for flying, I am working on my com'l pilot license and have a plane. Found your site by just doing a search for "Robert L. Scott Jr.". Glad I did. WW2 figher pilots were my boyhood heroes ( I am 53 ), and one of the very first books that I read by one was "God Is My Copilot". Over the years I have been able to meet many WW2 fighter jocks, and have even been able to attend two P-47 Pilots Assoc. reunions as a guest of a friend who flew Thunderbolts with the 57th FG out of Corsica. The reunions were great experiences for me - being surrounded by hundreds of my heroes ! One of my prized books is a copy of "Damned To Glory" - given to me by my uncle, who was a boy during the war, and had received it as a gift from my  grandparents.

I dont know if this can get to the General but here's hoping. My neighbor, Warren O'brien was probably one of the Generals pilots at Furstenfeldbruck Germany in 1950-51. Capt O'brien was sent to Korea and as a member of the 9th Fighter-Bomber Sq was shot down and was a presumed MIA until 2 years ago. His family found out he was in fact shot down and killed by a Russian MIG. Our search for anyone that may have knowedge of Capt O'brien goes on. Pass this on to General Scott. maybe he remembers one of his boys. If not he may want to know that at least we have found ours.

I am yet another person who first read GOD IS MY CO-PILOT as a child in the 1950's. From that time on, Robert L. Scott and David Lee "Tex" Hill were heroes of mine. I had the great fortune to spend a day with Gen. Scott at Warner-Robins, taping an interview for a video project I was working on at that time. It was, as you can easily imagine, a day OI shall never forget! Our country is blessed to have had the likes of "Tex" Hill and Robert Scott serving as they did at a time when everything we hold dear as a nation was truly in peril.

I have always been a fan of the Flying Tigers. Ever since I had gotten my first P-40 model with the famous shark mouth when I was 4, I have been hooked. Since then I have read many books on the Tigers. To bad it took about 50 years before these great heros received any recognition
from our goverment. You have done a great job on your web page. Keep up the good work.

Great site!
I found this site doing some research for a model project I am begining. Last xmas my wife bought me a Gen. Scott signed print of Marcus Stewart's "The day I owned the sky". I have a model of the P-40K, but I need the tail number, number of kill markings and any other things
painted on the plane. Maybe someone can direct me to a site with plenty of pictures.
By the way I also read God is my Co-Pilot when I was about 12. I have never forgotten it.

In researching my Dad's AAF days during WWII it was suggested to me that I might want to read GOD IS MY CO-PILOT. This was because I was so interested in the China-Burma-India Theater. My Dad was a B-29Bomb/Nav based in Piardoba, India in 1944. The person who made the suggestion is an AAF Veteran Pilot and a lifetime friend of David Lee ("Tex")Hill and the now deceased Albert J.("Ajax") Baumler. I remember my Dad having this book and I did read it in the early 1950's. I found a copy at a used bookstore and I have loved re-reading it. I e-mail excerpts to the AAF Veteran's I am in contact with and we discuss it daily. There were 4 Vet's that were instrumental in helping me find data on my Dad. It took me a few weeks but i searched and found some used hardback copies of the book and have sent them to them for  Christmas gifts. I couldn't think of anything they would love more.

They just tore down the old Westinghouse factory next to the Buffalo-Niagara International Airport to make room for more gates and ramp space. Before it bore the Westinghouse logo it was the home of Curtis-Wright Aircraft and birthplace of the P-40 and the C-46.

I read The Day I Owned the Sky a few years ago and became enraptured with Robert Scott! It was a great read and inspiration. I'm glad I stumbled across this site and thank all those involved in helping to preserve this national shrine!

Read "God is My Copilot" years ago and several times since and have always enjoyed it. Grew up on the movie of the same name and it is still one of my favorites although hollywood really had a good time with poetic license. But is was a film made at a time that that was needed. Robert L. Scott is truly the kind of man who is made a hero and did not seek it. As a resident of Georgia it's just another cause for pride.

Gen. Scott and my father did some sales development work together following WW2. My dad and I attended Gen. Scott's 85th birthday party held at the Air Museum and I was privileged to meet him myself. He was decked out in the dress mess uniform he had worn nearly 40 years earlier and it still fit him. He was cleared by the Flight Surgeon to pilot a F-15 that day. What a remarkable man.

It has been my pleasure to count General Scott as my friend for the past 12 years. Having read the book and seen the movie "God Is My Co-Plot" when I was much younger, it was a real privilege to meet the General. During World War II my brother flew supplies for the Flying Tigers. I wish every young person could meet General Scott....we don't have too many heroes today for our young people to look up to. He certainly is a true American hero!

My Dad was Frank Foye who worked for Curtiss Wright in the early 40's. He was a personal friend of Col. Scott. My Dad was a photographer and I have several pictures of Col. Scott my Dad took. I also have a copy of God Is My Co-Pilot with an inscription to my Dad from Col. Scott. My Dad passed away in 1987 in Girard, PA.

Wow! Gen. Scott has been a hero of mine since I was a kid. I grew up on stories about American airman in World War II, and God Is My Co-Pilot was one of the first real books that I read on the subject. I'm also a big fan of the movie of course, unlike John Wayne's Flying Tigers, it featured real P-40's. I guess, though, that in 1942 the real P-40's were being used by pilots like the General.

Anyway, I'm really tickled to know that the General is leading such a hardy life and is still a role model as he has been for so long. I also wish him the very best in that he and I both have something in common - God is my co-pilot too!

Thanks General, live long and prosper. Thanks also for the great book and for the many years of service to your country. I grew up safe thanks to what you did.

I like the web site very much. Too bad some of the links are dead. By a great stroke of luck, I recently found a copy of Damned to Glory. I have read the first chapter. While it makes for great reading, I believe it was written more for U.S. morale than true fact. The episode about a 8500 pound P-40 taking off, fully loaded with fuel and ordinance, on bamboo skids from a grass runway is almost laughable; no way would bamboo support that much weight and stress during take off of a P-40 from a dirt strip. Also, I doubt if the engine could pull the aircraft at all, much less take off. - Best regards-

FANastic web pages!!! :) Count me as an "always been FAN! Gen Scott has been my hero since my pre-teen WW II days after reading, and doing a high school book report, on his book, "God is My Co-Pilot." He's my co-pilot too, General! I saw the movie too, which was one more motivating factor in my life's dream to become a fighter pilot. I finally achieved that life's dream September 1956 after graduating from USAF Aviation Cadet Pilot Training, Bryan AFB, TX. We need more "General Scotts" today. On second though, there can only be one "General Scott." Thank God for him and you guys too for doing this tribute. I hope he is in good health. 92 years old this month!
QUESTION: I know this question has been asked a kazillion times; but, can anyone tell me how I can obtain a VHS video of "God is MY Co-Pilot?" Much Thanks.

It's been almost a year since I left the Museum and moved to Oklahoma City. I feel very honored to have been in the presence of such a great man such as Gen Scott. Besides being a great fighter pilot and an icon in his time, he has a heart of gold and it's as big as Texas (that's where I am originally from). George, you have done a great job on this web site. I am happy that people are enjoying the memorabilia. Next time you visit the General tell him I said hi and give him a hug for me.

OK George, after emailing you for over a month now, I have finally finished viewing your Web Site. I didn't know I was in the company of  such greatness!!! You three certainly have done your homework. I have only known Mike's worship of the General, and now I see it in others.
It's amazing as I read others stories, I understood the "awe" they felt, because thats how I felt on 10/26/99 at 2 p.m. when I sat in front of the General in his office and listened to him for 1-1/2
hours. What a man, what an inspiration, I left his presence feeling cleansed and renewed, ready to be a better person and hopefully live up to 1/1000th of his love and contribution to this country. He made Mike and I feel like we were his long lost friends and after the visit he
walked downstairs with us to pose for pictures in front of the P40. And when we left there were HUGS, again, treating us like long lost friends. What a man - thank you for putting out the Web Site so I can learn even more about this

I grew up under the shadows of aircraft from Griffiss AFB, Rome, NY in the 1950s. I read everything I could find on military aviation, including "God is My Copilot". From the time I was able to comprehend what I was reading "Scotty" was my hero. A role model. By the time I was in high school I had decided that if I ever had a son, he would be named Scotty. He is!
My eyes prevented me from entering the Air Force as a pilot, so I was destined to fly Cessnas and Pipers. Fifteen years we lived south of Fort Worth, TX, two miles west of Luck Field, the home of Duane Cole. I spent hundreds of hours at Luck just watching. Still this did not displace "Scotty" as Number one, Ding Hao.

I'm an WW2 aviation art collector(sometimes dealer),specializing in AAC/AAF and AVG prints and memorabilia. I became aware of Scotty after purchasing two pictures featuring his plane, then seeing "G.I.M.C.P." on Turner. Also picked up an original copy of his book around the same  time. An amazing guy! Just FYI on a somewhat related topic; Stan Stokes old AVG print(not to be confused with the new one which came out last year)is down to the last few copies, this came from the horses mouth. While it doesn’t directly have any "Scotty" value, it has MANY impossible to get AVG signatures and really is a beautiful picture, most importantly.P-40's Forever!

Here's the pilot and a word from him... Holloway, the engine quit running and I crash landed in a tea plantation. Flew a second tour with the 76th FS from october 44 on. Flew into Liuchow just before the big evacuation. I have two of general Scotts books and have enjoyed them over and over through the years. It has only been since the Internet that I have really been able learn more about General Scott.
I will be 53 on April 18th and have enjoyed a good life. I went into the Air Force in 1963 at the age of 17. I was a ground crew member on a kc135 out of Barksdale A.F.B. La. In 1965 we spent the year in southeast Asia. We flew out of Gaum, okinawa Thailand and the Pi. We refueled 105s, F4s,and B52's over Vietnam. I like to think we helped . I have worked at Columbia Falls Aluminum Co. for 25 years. Alma Pomeroy and I have been together since 1985 and between us we have 5 kids WE have a1950 170A Cessna A1985FLHTC,A1950 chevy pickup a 1956 ford and lots of Montana roads and blue sky  to use them in  We live in the Flathead Valley about 26 miles from glacier natl. park it is a great place to visit and a great place to live  We would like to hear from general Scott if it is possible Has he ever been to Montana?

What a great job that has been done putting this page together. It looks wonderful and getting better everyday. My hats off to the "gang" for giving this man the recognition that he deserves.

Finding your page is a great pleasure - I missed meeting Gen. Scott at an event in Morrow, GA a couple of years ago when I had to leave early and it's been somewhat of a regret ever since. I'll visit often... Thanks for your "labor of love" - Rocky
